As the world knows, Egypt experienced a peaceful revolution in which an authoritarian government gave way to a new democratic process. However, February's uprising has impacted tourism in Egypt, many travelers canceling trips already planned. The drop in tourism persists, despite the return to normalcy and the reopening of important sites such as the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. By traveling to Egypt, our dollars will strengthen the economy, help employment, and ultimately help this nascent democracy to succeed.

This could be the ideal time to travel to Egypt. Do you prefer to avoid crowds? Are you looking for value and luxury? Then 2011 is a great year to travel to Egypt. Immerse yourself in history by day and relax in luxury by night in Egypt's world class hotels (two Four Seasons in Cairo and their resort at Sharm El Sheikh) ... and even enjoy a Nile cruise.

Egypt Unveiled is an 11 day escorted trip hosted by the luxury travel experts at Abercrombie & Kent with space on departures throughout 2011 — or contact your luxury travel consultant to plan a completely customized vacation to Egypt.

Four Seasons Hualalai | reopening April 30

The recent 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan created a huge tidal wave that caused damage at Four Seasons Hualalai. All guests were safely evacuated in advance of the tsunami, and the resort suffered damage to the grounds and to some of the lower floor rooms. The reopening has been pushed back twice, now to April 30, 2011. In the words of one Four Seasons manager, “It's not the damage that is that bad; it's that we need to be that good.”

This is the text of the resort’s latest press release

Closure allows proper restoration of resort
following tusnami damage.
Four Seasons Resort Hualālai at Historic Ka‘ūpūlehu, the first and only AAA Five-Diamond and Forbes Five-Star resort on Hawaii Island, will reopen on April 30, 2011. The reopening follows a six-week closure caused by the earthquake-generated tsunami resulting from the recent earthquake in Japan.
The Resort sustained damage from the storm surge, bringing water, sand and debris onto the grounds, mainly affecting pool areas, landscaping, a restaurant and 12 guest rooms and suites.
Resort staff has been instrumental in the early clean-up efforts, and will remain so throughout the restoration. The Resort intends to keep all staff employed in various capacities wherever possible.
“We had planned on opening the Resort earlier, however upon further inspection and damage assessment, we determined it best to sustain the closure until April 30, in order to limit impact on the guest experience,” says Robert Whitfield, general manager of Four Seasons Resort Hualālai. “While there is no significant structural damage, we are well aware of what our guests desire and our need to provide that experience at the highest level possible. This additional time will allow us to polish the property in the fashion it is known for. We’d like to thank our guests for their understanding and outpouring of support, as we bring our resort back to perfect form.”
All guests with reservations prior to April 30 are being contacted by the reservations team to make alternate arrangements, which include re-booking at a later date, or staying at the Resort’s sister properties on Lāna‘i and Maui, and other Four Seasons properties around the world.

Mandarin Oriental Paris

Mandarin Oriental Paris is the newest addition to the Virtuoso collection of five-star luxury hotels in Paris. Centrally located at 251 rue Saint-Honore, the Mandarin Oriental Paris is on a great shopping street, just a block away from the Place Vendome, and very convenient to the Tuileries. In other words, a great location if you're coming to Paris and want to be able to walk to all the best tourist attractions.

So when does the hotel open? Summer, 2011, according to the Mandarin Oriental Paris website - but bookings are not yet being accepted. A boutique hotel with 99 rooms and 39 suites, this sketch suggests that the hotel will have large rooms with a very contemporary flair.

If you prefer the traditional "Palace Hotels" of Paris (the George V, Le Meurice, the Plaza, the Crillon), this will probably not be your hotel of choice. But if you go for modern design, the MO will offer stiff competition for the nearby Park Hyatt.

Looking for the best value? Just book through a Virtuoso luxury travel consultant at the Best Available Rate ... and receive the following value-added perks:
  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Complimentary Continental breakfast daily for up to two in-room guests
  • One 85 Euro Spa credit per stay
Drop me an email, and I'll let you know when the Mandarin Oriental Paris begins to accept reservations.
