upscale Paris

Paris is my favorite city in the world, and part of the wonder of Paris is that it can be savored at any budget level. Next week we'll take a look at some economical options for staying in Paris ... but today's Travel Horizon is about upscale Paris.

For those who want a real treat and can afford it, Paris has some of the most beautiful upscale hotels in the world. Their names are legendary: the Ritz, George V, Le Meurice, Plaza-Athenee. You'll feel like royalty when you walk through their exquisite lobbies, enjoy their grand and beautiful guest rooms, dine at their Michelin-starred restaurants, and pamper yourself in their spas.

A great hotel gives you access to great amenities. If you book through a Virtuoso agent, you'll receive a complimentary continental breakfast each morning, often served in your room. This is not your typical croissant and cup of coffee. You'll get a basket with an assortment of freshly baked patisserie, creamery butter and jams, yogurt, fresh fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, a pot of freshly brewed coffee, tea, or chocolat chaud. More calories than any of us needs, but this is Paris!

The upscale hotels of Paris offer you a magical experience. Guests at the Ritz can swim in their stunningly beautiful indoor pool. If you stay at the Plaza Athenee in the autumn, your children can ride the antique carousel in the courtyard (or in the winter months, use their ice skating rink), and Suite 888 has an unobstructed view of the Eiffel Tower from your guestroom window.

The luxury hotels of Paris are in the heart of the city. Walk out your door into le Jardin des Tuileries; stroll along the banks of the Seine; explore the Latin Quarter; visit Notre-Dame, the Musee d'Orsay, or the Louvre; or sit outside at the Cafe de la Paix and gaze at the ornate Opera house while you sip your cafe au lait. No taxi or metro needed -- you're right there. And if you enjoy shopping (or just window gazing), you're just steps away from the latest French couture.

If you want to experience upscale Paris, by all means use the services of a Virtuoso travel agent. You'll receive special Virtuoso rates (lower than you can dream of finding on expedia or orbitz), complimentary breakfasts, upgrades if available on check-in or at time of booking for some properties, and other amenities that may include spa credits, complimentary meals, or even free transfers from Charles de Gaul.

This is not the only way to see Paris, but if you can afford it, what a romantic way to visit the City of Lights!
